Supreme Court eyes on fake babas, CJI says to SG – 'Look at each one, it spoils everyone's name'

There are many fake Baba ashrams across the country. A petition has been filed in the Supreme Court regarding this. The petition has demanded a direction to close the ashrams and spiritual centers run by fake babas. The Supreme Court has agreed to consider this petition and has directed the Solicitor General Tushar Mehta to look into the matter.

The Supreme Court on Wednesday asked the Solicitor General to look into the case of ashrams run by fraudulent babas. Chief Justice of India SA Bobde said that look at it and look at each one, what can be done. The Chief Justice said, “This is spoiling everyone's name.” The petition claimed that in such ashrams, women live in dirty and unhealthy conditions such as jail, which threatens to infect them with corona.

The petition said that those ashrams should be closed, which have a criminal case against those who run them. The Supreme Court has asked the Solicitor General to look into the matter and has asked the government to take instructions. A bench headed by Chief Justice SA Bobde also directed the petitioner to give a copy of the petition to the office of Solicitor General Tushar Mehta representing the Center. The top court sought Mehta's views on the case and scheduled the case for further hearing after two weeks.

In the petition, the petitioner said that her daughter had come from the US to study and was a scholar, but since 2015 she has been stuck in one such ashram in Rohini. There are many ashrams run by fake babas in Delhi and across the country and there are hundreds of thousands of women in those ashrams. The petition has demanded the evacuation of the spiritual school at Rohini and the evacuation of about 170 women living there.

Petitioner Dumpala Ramireddy, a resident of Secunderabad, has argued in the petition that very serious criminal cases have been registered against Virendra Dev Dixit, Asaram Bapu, Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh etc., yet his ashrams are being run with the help of his close associates. The petitioner said that people are living in a lot of dirt in all the ashrams. In such a situation there is a threat to his health. Women are forcibly kept in the ashram, they are given drugs so that they cannot go out due to drug addiction. The application said that no authority is taking action on the ashram run by such fake babas.
