Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Jayanti 2019: Today (October 31) is the 144th birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the country's first home minister. He was one of the important social and political leaders of the country. He played an important role in the struggle for independence of the country. He was born on 31 October 1875 in Nadiad, Gujarat. Because of his actions, people used to address him by the name of Sardar.
The barrister's course was done in 30 months: Vallabh bhai passed matriculation at the age of 22. He was quite an ordinary person for the people around him, but his will power was quite strong. He wanted to become a barrister. For this, he took admission in the Secondary Dharamshala Temple in England at the age of 36. It is said that at that time the barrister's course was 36 months, which he had completed in just 30 months. After returning to India he became the most successful barrister of Ahmedabad.
When Vallabh Bhai jumped in the freedom struggle: Inspired by the actions and ideals of Mahatma Gandhi, Patel too joined the struggle for the independence of the country. He organized farmers from Kheda, Bardoli and other areas of Gujarat in protest against the tax imposed by the British government and started the Civil Disobedience Movement in Gujarat. He succeeded in his goal, after which the British government had to waive that year's revenue tax. With this, he became one of the most influential leaders of Gujarat.
Municipality Chairman made 3 times: Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was appointed the President of the State Congress Committee of Gujarat in 1920 and remained in the post till 1945. He was a supporter of Gandhiji's non-cooperation movement. In Gujarat, he strongly opposed evils like alcoholism, untouchability and caste discrimination. In 1922, 1924 and 1927 he was elected president of the municipality of Ahmedabad.
Patel was the main leader of Quit India Movement: When Mahatma Gandhi was in jail, he led the Satyagraha movement in 1923 Nagpur against the British law prohibiting the hoisting of the Indian flag. In 1931 he became the President of the Indian National Congress. In 1934 and 1937, Congress was at the forefront of the All India election campaign. At the same time, in 1942, he was a prominent leader in organizing the Quit India Movement. He was imprisoned by the police for his involvement in the Quit India Movement and was released in 1945.
First Home Minister formed after independence: After independence, he became the first Home Minister and Deputy Prime Minister of the country. He organized relief camps for refugees in Punjab and Delhi. Sardar Patel owes the credit of tying 565 semi-autonomous princely states to India in unity. Vallabh bhai was fully associated with Mahatma Gandhi. After Mahatma Gandhi's death, his situation also started deteriorating. He died of a heart attack on 15 December 1950, in just 2 months of Gandhiji's death. He was a courageous and determined man. For this reason he is also called the 'Iron Man of India'.
